For more than five decades, entrepreneur William E. Schuiling has led operations at Brown Automotive Group, the largest car dealership company in the Mid-Atlantic region. William Schuiling is also highly active with philanthropic causes across the country. He is a major donor to the Community Food Pantry in Charlevoix, Michigan, which fights against food insecurity in the area.

According to the nonprofit Feeding America, more than 1.3 million Michigan residents face some form of food insecurity. This means that individuals or families may not be able to afford food at some point during the year. While the nutritional issues stemming from food insecurity are well-known, researchers at the University of Michigan have discovered that food insecurity also has a profound impact on the mental health and well-being of young children.

After collecting qualitative data from interviews with 60 children who have experienced food insecurity, researchers found that these children felt a range of negative emotions including anger, frustration, sadness, and embarrassment as a result of worrying about having enough food. The findings suggest that children are still impacted psychologically, even as parents attempt to shield them from hunger through efforts such as preparing smaller or simpler meals to ensure their children have something to eat.
